I advised that it was my information that despite the fact that the river - was open for fishing only two days per week, this ‘band had . been fishing for seven daysa » week from May ] onward. “Tasked for the catch num- _ bers during those periods - when the river was supposed to be closed and or some indi- cation when this catch would . be reported. To date I have A ~.Nadereh -. Rahimi, - not received a reply. Subsequently, we in the B.C Wildlife Federation dis- covered that this band had continued with their illegal activity throughout the sum- mer and into the fall. In fact they were continuing to fish with gillnets during that peri- od in September and October when the river was closed to all salmon fishing to protect ‘interested men to join their annual Christmas Chorus. It’s free and everything is provid- ed. I brought this matter to the attention of the staff in Surrey in September and was advised that they would be producing catch dara and that they had negotiated with the Cheam Band and there would be no more fishing. You can imagine my sur- prise when following the Thanksgiving weekend I received a call from one of our members who advised they had seen members of the Cheam Band fishing in the Fraser with gillnets on the Thanksgiving weekend. As the Thompson Coho closure was stil in effect they contacted the DFO enforcement staff and were advised that there . Would be no action taken as the band had a permit to fish. In addition vou refuse to allow the recreational fishery to fish selectively in the same waters you have accord- ing to staff, authorized a gill- net fishery. I as chairman of the B.C Wildlife Federation Native Affairs Committee, would at this time like to register my objection to your actions in this matter. I would also request your reasoning for requiring all other native bands to fish selectively in the same area at that time and refusing to allow the recreational fishery to fish in any manner whatso- ever. We would also az this time, Mr. Minister, like to request the catch data for crab harvest by the Musqueum and Squamish Bands this past vear under the fishing agreements you signed with them.
