Physiotherapis Jan-Christian Sorensen ee eeaeaneenatiateed eee Sports Reporter jsorensen@usnews.cam PAIGE Larson must have the magic touch. ,_ The Canadian Paralympic Committee appointed the North Vancouver physiotherapist ro the } ]-member athletic support staff that will accompany the Canadian team compet- ing in the Paralympic Games this October in’ Sydney, Australia. . — The longtime North Van resident owns and works at both Deep Cove Physiotherapy and the North Shore Sports Medicine Clinic at Capilano College. _ Larson will spend her time at the Games as a physiothera- pist for the National Women’s Wheelchair Paralympic team. “We'll be seeing to all the atkictes’ needs as far as physio goes,” said Larson, who was named to the team earlier this spring. “Basically, we provide onsite medical treatment as they Set injured or treating injuries that they bring to the Games.” While it’s her first crack at the Games, she’s got ample experience: Resides providing physio services for Capilano College's varsity sports teams since 1995 and treating the ex- Brittania Lions division H men’s rugby squad, she also worked the 1993 Canada Summer Games and the Commonwealth Games the following year. The national team will be on Larson’s home turf October 9-12 for a waining camp before heading for the Olympic Village in Australia. Canada’s Women’s Paralympic basketball team is current- _ly ranked first in the world. The squad has taken the zold at the last two Games. ; Larson first cut her teeth with the team when the cagers qualified for the Paralympics with a gold-medal finish at the Para Pan American Games last November in Mexico City. The Canadian Paralympic contingent competing in Sydney will include 160 athletes and 80 team officiais competing in a full slate of 18 sports. Awide range of activities will be represented ar the Games, from archery to cveling to power lifting and rugby. - The Games will attract 4,000 athletes, 3,000 officials and _ 12,000 volunteers from 125 countries this October 18-29, immediately following the close of the Summer Olympics. Canada has taken part in the Games — which follow the same four-year schedule as the Olympics — since 1968.
