“Time marches on and soon it’s plain You've won nev heart and Pre lost my brain, It’s delightftel, it’s delicious, it's delovely.” — from Irs Delorely, by Cole Porter DELIGHTFUL, delicious, even delovely: all are suitable adjectives for describing the Stanley Theatre — Star Anise double bill currently play- ing on South Granville in Vancouver. Star Anise is now run under the discerning eye of general manager James Steck, most recently of Oritalia. ~ Once installed in his new digs he set to work immedi- ately — removing the odd wall, painting, refurnishing, and generally brightening the small space. Then he and new executive chef Miquel Goncalves set to work on the menu, using regional meats, seafood and produce in combinations that clearly mark a _ return to Pacific Northwest cuisine. He's also teamed up with the beautifully refurbished the- atre up the street half'a block to offer Star Anise customers a three-course pre-theatre menu and tickets to a show. Until September, it’s Hotel Porter on the playbill at the Stanley — a musical review by Dean Regan, with music and lyrics by ... you guessed right: Cole Porter. Star Anise guests can dine on the likes of a “Hotel Porterhouse” steak — or tamarind-glazed salmon, or free range chicken breast — then tap their toes and snap their fin- gers along to the fikes of “Let’s Do It, Let’s Fall In Leve” or “Don’t Fence Me In.” It’s a winning combination, even for those of us who never lived througl, the Great Depression, the war years, or the golden era of Hollywood. Hotel Porter, starring Ryan Silverman, Jennifer Lyon, Neil .. Minor, Jayme Armstrong, Bryant Olender, and Terra MacLeod runs to Sept. 2 at the Stanley Theatre. I read Kasey Wilson’s third edition of Vancouver Best Places. Though it’s billed as a guide to help tourists pass as locals by hitting all the hip and happening places, locais may find it helpful — and an inspiration — as well. There are plenty of North Shore references, including several of our better restau-_ rants, directions to our parks and beaches and some of our shops — most notably wine shops such as Dundarave Wine Cellars, Edgemont Village Wines and Liberty Wine Merchants. Wilson knows her stuff. She’s a freelance food, wine and travel writer and co-hosts The Best of Food and Wine on CFUN. She and her team of contributing writers have put together a helpful guide to get you moving this summer. Vancouver Best Places is $28.95 in bookstores. Taking the body to a new level .
