” little frog with a tail
made waves again
Monday night at West
Vancouver municipal
hail.

Council reconvened dis-
cussion of an application by
British Pacific Properties Ltd.
to build the Whitby Estates
residential neighborhood in an
area between McDonald
Creek and Marr Creek.

The proposed devzlop-
ment, which could harm the
habitat of the unusual amphib-
ians, would accommodate a
maximum of 263 homes,
parks and a school site.

The Ministry of

Environment, Parks — and
Lands notes the tailed frog is
“blue listed” (potentially sen-
sitive to logging). The frog
occupies small non-fish bear-
ing streams in coastal forests.

The railed frog is the most
primitive frog in North
America and the only frog
found in fast-flowing streams.

The tadpoles live in streams
for three to five years.

To protect the tadpoles,
the Ministry of Environment
has recommended setbacks at
the creek site in West
