Fireplaces: Ethics is the esthetics of the future Dear Editor: Wood-bumers may have more in common with cigarette smokers than they realize. Recent research from Norway sug- gests that wood-burners may become addicted to the smoke from their fireplace and stoves. The study, which spans a three-year period, found that wood-burners display all the classic withdrawal symptoms of Cigarette smokers when deprived of their fires (wood smoke contains many of the chemicals found in cigarette smoke). Although the wood-burners believed that it was the “cozi- ness” of a fire and the crackling sounds it makes which they missed, when they were provided with a hermetically sealed fire it failed to satisfy over 90% of the test subjects. This led researchers to conclude that it was the actual smoke which the wood-burners missed and not the esthetics of a fire. So, if you have an overwhelming urge to switch off the central heating and light a fire, it may not be as innocent as a harmless game of “let's pretend it’s yesteryear.” Lee North Vancouver Dear Editor: TE would like to commend the North Shore News for having the foresight and integrity to publish Hilary Stirlirig’s intelligent article “In the name of science” (Friday, Feb. 21).
