ViP’s accusations
rile women’s group

North Vancouver MP Ted
White made a very serious
accusation in his May 8 adver-
torial “Summer Subsidies
Using Your Money" against
our organization, North Shore
Women's Centre (NSWC),
and our neighbors, the North
Shore Crisis Services Society
(NSCSS), and it is my hope
that the same people who read
that article see this letter, in the
interest of clearing our names
of his potentially very damag-
ing comments.

The advertorial concerned

for the Student Summer
Placement Program, a federal
government grant program
whereby non-profit organiza-
tions and some businesses are
subsidized to hire a summer

bors and not at the same
address (the addresses are
3093 and 3095 Lonsdale
Ave., respectively).

For the past three years,
NSWC has sublet office
space from NSCSS, primarily
in the interest of economy,
efficiency, and better service
to our clients.

Second, it is true that we
both serve women of the
community, but our mandates
differ considerably, and with-
out belaboring that in this let-
ter, I invite anyone to call me
personally for a description of
our respective roles.

What I find most surpris-
ing is that we have made sev-
eral efforts to inform Mr.
White about our activities and
services and yet he remains
uninformed. As are all MPs
and MLAs, he is on our mail-
ing list and receives our
newsletter, annual reports, as
well as invitations to special
events, which he has never
attended.

I would like to suggest that
Mr. White take the time to
educate himzelf about the
very important issues facing
the women of our community,
particularly before attempting
to represent them publicly.
