Think to the 1970s and you'll grasp a sense of the beginning. E- mail is a powerful communication medium. E-mail is fast-food digital thought process. E-mail is almost instant. Compose a message and send it on the fly, double-quick. Connect your personal computer via modem to the Intemet (a massive global population of interconnected computers) and bounce messages around the world in minutes. The only real delay is the time the message sits at its destination waiting for the recipient to pick it up. E-mail allows you to take com- puter-generated files and attach them to the message being sent. Fire it off to as many people as you like, simul- taneously, just about as easily as sending it to one person. A computer can become much like a post office with private mail boxes, public bulletin boards and on- line services where people can post messages for others to read and respond to, This is known as confer- encing in computer lingo. An Internet feature called Usenet functions much like a gargantuan buletin board service (BBS). Usenet conferences are called news groups. A computer providing this kind of service is said to be running a (BBS) and has at least one phone line dedi- cated for a modem. The computer may be connected to a group of com- puters linked by cables. Continuing on with the handy postal metaphor, take a trip to the Nightly: 7:15, 0:40, FrvSun: 1:20, 7.35, 9 40. €.C. Bob Grahame CHANGES post office to check your private mail box. E-mail-wise this is called log- ging in or onto the service. Use a key (password) to enter the building and use the key to open your mail box. Perhaps this key opens more than one door. If information is indeed the new currency, in the new reality you are defined by your level of access. Once you've collected the mail, you look across the room and sec a series of doors with labels on them. Computing flexibility being what it is, this is more than a simple post office after all. You find a door that opens with your key. You're hungry. The door is labeled “Restaurants.” You step through. Bulletin Boards Inside there’s a bulletin board on a wall. It’s plastered with messages. Some fastidious person has system- atically placed the messages into MARY SHELLEY'S FRANKE! An enve- lope grabs your interest and you open it. Perhaps someone is explain- ing that they did not have a very good meal ata certain restaurant, You look at the oulletin board again and find that another person has responded to the message. This person has had a wonderful meal at the very same restaurant. You agree and respond to tell every- one about the fabulous meal you had. Now there are three messages. Because you responded to the sec- ond message, you have created a branch. The series of messages is called a thread, You leave for someone else to pick up the thread, exit cyberspace and retura to the real world to enjoy another fine meal at the restaurant in question. To create an e-mail message, you need a personal computer, telecom- munications software, a modem, a phone line and a service to act as a post office. Modems A quick word about modems. Modem is short for modutator- demodulator. In simple terms, the device takes digital computer infor- mation and converts it into a form that the telephone system can work with, anwog information. The process is reversed at the receiving end. Modems are complex. Modems are temperamental. They are not all the same. They can have many fea- tures including various speeds. The speedier the modem, the more com- plex the connection with another modem becomes. See Modems page 36 Nightly 7 15.045 FrvSun 2 15, 7.15, 0-45.
