lition got its start PICTURE THIS: Before the turn of the century, a single daughter is surrounded by five brothers, moth- erless in a hostile environment, left to be reared by a bereaved father. That this father reared his chil- dren successfully is dest testified to by the love and respect his devo- lion engendered in that grateful daughter, Mrs. John Bruce Dodd (originally Senora Smart). Now leap ahead to 1909. Dodd is now a young mother, with all the responsibilities and rewards that come with having a child. And, as she mulls over her good fortune, she is struck with an inspiring thought —- why not a Father’s Day in honor of her own beloved dad and other fathers? During the following year. Dodd campaigned and cajoled. gently pushed, and finally persuad- ed the city leaders of Spokane, Washington, along with religious leaders of the community. to sup- port her idea of celebrating father- hood through the observance of a Father’s Day. So it happened, on the third Sunday of June in 1910, 84 years ago. A personal goal It had been Dodd's goal to inau- gurate Father’s Day on her father’s birthday, June 6. But the members of the Spokane Ministerial Association, who had agreed to preach special sermons on that first Father's Day, couldn't make the deadline, so the first Father’s Day was put off a couple of weeks, until the third Sunday of June. And so it has been ever since. Although Father's Day wasn’t pro- claimed nationally unti) much later. it had already become a favorite North American celebration. But for more than a generation after the first observance of Father’s Day in Spokane in 1910. across-the-board acceptance was elusive, and what there was was not coordinated. Increased awareness Then, in 1931, the Father's Day Council began a public awareness program that, in a few short years, made Father's Day into a-institu- tion. Today, most people report that they do something to mark Father's Day as a special day for their dads.
