Why did you become a car- diologist? During medical school ! thought the heart offered tremen- dous advances in the field, The treatment of heart problems was advancing so that you could actu- ally help people and save people. There are a lot of areas in med- icine that are advancing fan- tastically in the research end, but you can't make very many inroads as far as actually helping patients. How has cardiology changed over the years? As far as advancements have gone, one thing has led to the .other. For example, the open-heart pump machine allowed us to keep people on the operating table with their heart stopped to put in valves and to do other pro- cedures. A patient’s heart can be stopped for one or two hours. Before the pump was available, you had to be in and out in minutes during a heart operation. How do you feel about the doc- tors’ dispute with the provincial government? | think a number of the things the government has done or says it wants to do are changes that should be done. However, the method of how they are doing these things is where we, as doctors, take great exception. By this I mean, many doctors take exception to the unilateral methods of making the rules and the speed at which the rules are made. Clearly, we have to do some- thing to decrease the deficit and to decrease the wildly expanded funds needed for health care. But I strongly feel that changes should be done in discussions with physi- cians. How do you feel about the pro- vincial government’s move tv cap salaries of high-end specialists? If you are a specialist, the patients that you see are referred to you because their family physicians feel that they have a problem. Specialists don’t stand out on the streets herding people into their offices. If a specialist is good, he is go- ing to get a lot of people referred to him. I think anyone in any kind of work should be recompensed for the hours they put in because they are doing a good job. Why haven't yeu gone to work permanently in the United States? Pm a Canadian. I like it here. My family lives here. 1 think Van- couver has a lot to offer. All of us get offers from the United States. Yes. But I’m happy enough with the way things have gone. Would you want to be treated in a community hospital versus a regional centre like St. Paui’s Hospital? It would depend on what I had, I think community hospitals have a lot to offer. HI had ordinary, everyday-type of pneumonia, I’d be happy to be treated in a community hospital. There are patients who continue to smoke, eat poorly, and den’'t do exercises who find themselves back in your office needing another bypass. What is your reaction as a doctor? I think these patients are very foolish. They should know smoking is one of the three major risk factors. And smoking is the only risk factor that is readibly controlable. However, I’ve always felt very strongly that a physician is not a policeman. Were bypasses supposed to last forever? I’m not sure that we thought they would last forever. The only way out of West Van was over this little bridge over the Capilano River. There was hardly anybody liv- ing near Horseshoe Bay. Caulfeild was way out.
