Election ON THE OTHER HAND THIS WIMPLAN(D of ours gets messier by the day. Itis true that for the ime being we are in better case than Ethiopia, but as far as the West is concerned we number among the weirdest, One reason is that our paliti- cians are scared of the common herd even though the air is full of blather about “the polities of in- clusion,” Kim Campbell's phoney pitch, Wwenty-five years ago it was equally full of blather about “narticipatory democracy," Trudeau's phoney pitch. “Trust the people?" Leave that to the Winston Churchills. For now we see a Tory-initiated gag law that prohibits anyone from spending more than $1,000 to support or oppose parties during federal elections. The penalty for breaking the law will be heavy fines or jail. And although it was a Tory in- vention there has been no opposi- tion from the opposition parties. United we stand... The Liberals, meanwhile, believe that father knows best. If constituencies don’t choose enough fems, Jean Chretien will choose them himself and drop them in by parachute. The louder such rotters yell about democracy and the grass roots, the less they practise what they preach. It follows, therefore, that the biggest sinner of all is Preston Manning’s Reform party. (And I do mean HIS Reform party.) It knocked my socks off when | heard that Manning and his junta had nullified the nominatign of John Gamble, Q.C., as the Reform candidate for Toronto’s Don Valley West. Mr. Gamble (no relation to that other disillusioned Reformer, Ron Gamble of North Van) is a former Tory MP and Tory leadership candidate. Manning & Co. served him with Notice to go even though he had -the backing of his constituency association. cag law Does that sound familiar? Same thing happened when f tried to carry the Reform fag from West Vancouver to Ottawa in F988. Rejections and expulsions seem to be as common én the Reform party as in the od ULS.S.R. Only difference is that Preston hasn't yet got around to shooting people. The list of undesirables is along one. {tincludes Bill Gairdner, a top-rate political writer and author af The Trouble With Canada. But the trouble with VM was that his book included a chapter on immigration of which the media disapproved. Goodbye, Mr. Gairdner. No more speeches to Reform au- diences, please. The policy plumbs the depths, Three years ago a lady in Victoria who was on the local executive of the Alliance For The Preservation of English in Canada (APEC) was told she couldn't be on the local APEC executive and in Reform. Auf wiedersehen, lady, and Heil Hitler! Others who have come under the basilisk gaze of Reform party democracy are Anne Hartmann, a splendid woman who is the presi- dent of The Northern Foundation, a group of rightish bent; Paul Fromm of C-FAR (Citizens for Foreign Aid Reform), and George Vanderbosh of Winnipeg, who was on the party's national coun- cil. Albare “extremists,” according to Manning. Just like me. Then there is Mark Waters, ‘a former Reformer.”* He's the son of Stan Waters, the deceased Reform party senator, but didn’t like Manning’s ‘‘authoritarian control,’’ What's it all about? Political correctness. Manning quakes at the thought of being denounced by the media as a racist. And never mind what the common folk want. He hasn’t learned, and probably never will learn, to carry the ball to the enemy — and damn the media, He is even fuzzy on official bi- lingualism, Hence his fear of APEC, which is also ‘‘extremist.’’ And he can turn political somer- saults overnight, as he did on the GST, which he supports. No other party exercises such iron control over the nomination of candidates even though Mann- ing came on the scene yelling about ‘‘paramount constituency rule” and similar bilge. His screening process wouldn’t shame that of the FBI. When internal party surveys don't coincide with the wisdom of the top brass the results are shredded, as happened iast year. He even tried to wriggle out of referendum and recall and had to be dragged back to it by conven- tion delegates. NV driver jailed 20 days A 20-YEAR-OLD North Vancouver man was jailed for a total of 20 days and had his driver’s licence suspended for 12 months in connection with charges of driving while prohibited and speeding. Ethan Patrick Sprungman, 20, KEN BAXTER 1LAWYER 24 Years was also fined $300. The penalties stem from an incident that occur- red on Mount Seymour Parkway on June 9, 1992. Judge Reginald Grandison recommended that Sprungman ‘serve full time and straight time”’ on his jail sentence. Sprungman appeared in North Vancouver provinicial court on Thursday, May 20.
