Cracks seriously reduce a wind- shield’s ability to perform this function safely. According to Adam Dropkin of Super Glass and Car Care in North Vancouver, ‘The wind- shield is put in the car to keep things from hitting you in the face and to keep you in the car in case you have a front-end collision and you go flying forward.’’ ~ “The chances are you will go through the windshield a_ little quicker if there is a defect in the windshield.’’ Although there is nothing a car owner can do to protect the wind- shield, a glass shop can fix ‘shells’? or small holes in the glass by pumping resin into them. Dropkin says shells don’t gen- erally run, but if there is any un- due pressure on that area of the windshield, it could become a small crack, which in turn could run the length of the windshield. “As soon as there’s a defect in your windshield, such as a bulfct chip or a crack or something, it has compromised the strength of that windshield,” he says. Filling a shell with resin is only a temporary measure that saves ICBC from having to buy a whole new windshield. It will also save the driver from having to pay his or her deducti- . ble at that point. Dropkin says that the. resin-fill- . ed shell will be less of a strong point than a new windshield, but stronger than a neglected shell. “It’s like a crack in a dam,’’ he says. ‘‘The dam is still strong, but any undue stress put on that point will blow the dam at that point.” One chip is not going to make | that big'a difference as long as it’s filled. But if it is in the driver’s line of vision, or there are two or three, then Dropkin suggests the wind- shield be replaced, Cracks in- the glass warrant replacing it immediately, he says. If you’ve been considering tin- ting your windows, remember that it is illegal to tint your windshield. However, it is legal to tint your back window, any rear door win- dows, and a band along the top of the windshield.
