London and silent era Hollywood
give this movie a polished sheen.’
But 80. years crammed into 2%
hours turns the event into a
roller-coaster ride.

This laughing-on-the-outside-cr

ying-on-the-inside biography does
have some good performances

(besides Downey's terrific rendi-
tion), especially Kevin Kline as the
energetic bon vivant Douglas
Fairbanks. But in the middle of an
otherwise straight-faced telling, At-
tenborough throws in some
sped-up slapstick for a cheap
chuckle. Still, it also provides
some of the few laughs about one
of the world’s funniest men. . °
