A Year in Provence, but Deggan
says he wrote Al/ Our Summers
are French long before Mayle. it
was just a matter of getting it
published.

The Grescoes encouraged him
to publish his manuscript and to
do the illustrations.

“4'd been in design all my life
but | thought I’m not an illustrator.
Then | said, oh damn, I've got to

lo it.

“'t bought a pen and some ink
and did one, which | hated. But
the second one | liked.”

In the end Deggan wound up
self-publishing and designing the
entire book with help from the
Grescoes and a distribution deal
with Douglas & Mcintyre.

Alf Our Summers Are French is
an easy read — | finished it in two
days, but it could easily be knock-
ed off in one afternoon.

Deggan admits his work is not a
very complex read; that the writ-
ing is si mple and straightforward.

Those who have read the book

of the characters — the-Deggans’
infamous neighbor and constant
source of amusement, de Sappe,
the Spanish masons who ‘‘bug-
gered, up my house but made great
copy’ — are still alive and well

“| have a great deal more to
write about de Sappe,’’ he laughs.
“He smells like a sack of old
potatoes.’’

Does this mean he’s planning a
sequel? Toujours Auvergne
perhaps?

“| don’t know,” Deggan res-
ponds. ‘’We'll have to wait and
see what crazy things happen to
us. Maybe in my old age —
whenever that happens.”
