Seniors discuss family issues THE CAPILANO | Conununits Services Society (CCSS) Seniors’ Hub held a discussion on family issues recently as part of the B.C. Council for the Family's survey af seniors, The discussian was led by Patricia Bell, president of CCSS, and Jean Taylor, coordinator of the Seniors’ Hub. Twenty-one seniors, ranging trom 60 to 90 years, voiced their opinions on a nuntber of issues ranging from drug abuse and youth gangs to the rights of grandparents and eaplor- ing the roles and values of fami- lies today. “Today's seniors are more in- dependent,’* says Alice Hargreaves, executive director of CCSS. "They prefer to make their own decisions and choices about their lifestyles and care. “Howev- er,’ adds Hargreaves, ‘they con- tinue to believe strongly thie fami- ly relationships are extremely im- Portant lo the structure of our society."' Among the key conclusions reached at the discussion was the importance of listening to indi- vidual) family members and establishing mutual trust and Fespect. It was also recognized that, regardless of ave, we can learn from each other and should ensure a caring, unconditional love throughout the family unit. The goal of the Seniors’ Hub is to bridge gaps in’ services and programs for seniors and to en- courage self-care, independence and mutual aid. It provides pro- grams such as Telefriend, a service where volunteers provide daily re- assurance calls to isolated seniors, a driving service to medical and social appointments, and a mon- thly social event. CCSS is a charitable non-profit organization whose mandate is to work cooperatively with the community in’ solving problems while providing volunteer oppor- tunities.
