14 - Friday. September 28. 1990 - North Shore News HOME & GARDEN VanDusen artist to exhibit unusual botanical lithographs VANDUSEN BOTANICAL Garden artist in resi- dence, Mary Comber Miles, will hold a show of her latest work Tuesday, Oct. 2 to Saturday, Oct. 13 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily in the Floral Hall at VanDusen Gardens, corner of 37th Avenue and Oak Street. A new and exciting feature of this show is a revival of a (9 century stone lithographic technique for botanical illustrations. Lithographs, done in the style of W.H. Fitch, resemble a soft pencil drawing and each one is hand painted in the botanically accurate colors. No one else is working in this method of reproduction on the West Coast and the Canada Art Bank has just purchased one for its collectivu. The Garden as art discussed WHEN CORNELIA Hahn Oberlander, featured speaker at a program co-sponsored by the Jew- ish Festival of the Arts Society and the VanDusen Botanical Garden, discusses her topic, ‘*The Garden as Art.*” she will, as she puts it, “deal with man’s eternal longing for the Garden of Eden." With the aid of slides, she hopes to develop ‘‘man's activity in his garden throughout the ages and thereby show man’s constant concerns with esthetics.” Oberlander will be speaking on Tuesday, Oct. 2 at 8 p.m. in the Floral Hall of the VanDusen Botanical Garden, Oak Street and 37th Avenue. The free talk is open to the public and will be preced- ed at 7 p.m. by an Annual Gener- al Meeting and election of officers of the Jewish Festival of the Arts Society; the talk will be followed by coffee and refreshments. Oberlander received her BA from Smith College, and MA from Harvard University Gradu- ate School of Design and a Bachelor of Landscape Architec- ture. In 1964 Smith awarded her a distinguished service medal, acknowledging her ‘‘mastery’’ of her art and her ability to ‘‘work creatively with architects and engineers.’ For the past 40 years she has been involved as a land- scape architect in a wide range of projects with noted international architects and public agencies in Canada and the United States, Since 1974 Oberlander has worked with Arthur Erickson Ar- chitects, Last May, at a formal White House ceremony, Barbara Bush honored Cornelia Hahn Oberlander/Arthur Erickson Ar- chitects with an award from the American Association of Nurserymen for their role in Jand- scape development of the new Canadian Chancery in Washington, D.C. Many local projects have been enhanced by Oberlander'’s skills: a few include the Robson Square complex, the Museum of Anthro- pology, the UBC Faculty Club and sites at Expo °'86, among others. The many thought-provocking talks Oberlander has given across the continent are marked by a lively manner and reflect her deep commitment to beauty and nature. For information call 266-0245.
