Dear Editor: Regarding Noel Wrigh:’s col- umn More immigrants needed to keep gran and gramp, is it not totally contradictory to mandate retirement at age 65 and then seek to increase the younger population to support those who have been denied the right to support themselves? Furthermore, the logic of his argument, taken to its conclusion, is frightening. For an ever increas- ing eiderly population we require an ever increasing supply of im- migrants who will themselves become elderly and add to the spiral of more people to support MAILBOX Immigration logic is ‘frightening’ more people. Inevitably, we will become, in terms of population, another India or China. I seriously doubt that the major- ity of Canadians wish to leave such a legacy for their descendants. As for the elderly who require care, we could provide that with little hardship if only the politi- cians would stop giving away our tax dollars to countries which can- not control their population growth (the root cause of their poverty), cease buying votes (payouts to the various interest groups in this country) and do without a few nuclear submarines. M.F. Cowan North Vancouver ICBC clarifies stats Dear Editor: The item ICBC Raises Rates in your Dec. 30 editicn could cause some confusion by mixing accident statistics with claims statistics. Over a year, there wiil be many more claims reported to ICBC than accidents filed with the police. One reason is that there are many motor vehicle mishaps with damages of under $400. Only those over $400 are reported to the police. In addition, if you have two vehicles involved in an accident, each with a driver and one passen- ger, this could result in two prop- erty damage claims and four bodi- ly injury claims to ICBC. That’s a total of six claims out of one acci- dent.
