Taking on arch-rival Alpha Sports of New Westminster in quarter-final action of the St. John’s, Nfld., tournament, the Angell's gave it their alt to win 7-5. After an easy semi-final victory over Manitoba 6-1, Vancouver squad lost 2-0 to Alberta in the final. “*I¢ was the most exciting game of the tournament,”’ team spon- sor Allan Angell said of the key game against Alpha Sports. ‘“We used all our energy there and fell flat in the final.”* Angell’s shortstop Alecia Stephenson batted .857. and for her performance throughout the tournament won the championship’s shortstop award. Team-mate Sandi Leroux was named the tournament's outstan- ding rightfielder. “In our first year as a team to be number two in Canada we can’t complain,”’ said Angell. ‘But to come that close, it’s a little tough.’ Selects take soccer tourney TOP-NOTCH TEAMWORK from the first division North Shore Selects spelied 9 win coupled with an outstanding record at the six-team Richmond international soccer tournament recently. In the final, the Selects beat Richmond United 3-1 to take home the trophy; and by winnirg ail five elimination games chalked up a total goal record of 18 to five. The North Shore Selects squad expects (o return with many of the same players next season. the West Swimmers among Canada’s best NORTH VANCOUVER swimmer Catherine Schier, 15, finished among the top 16 in Canada in her races at the senior nationals competition in Toronto last month. Joining Schier in finishing among the country’s best were Michelle Woods, 16, whose best time put her 22nd in Canada in 200-metre backstroke, and Andra Anglin, 18, whose best time put her 26th in Canada in 200-metre breaststroke. At the Far Western Championships in Concord, Calif., eartier in the month, Chena recorded (wo gold medals, five silver medals and two bronze medals. In that meet, Pam Gray joined Schier, Woods and Anglin in the top eight. A look at the Chena Swim Club from its rational-level swimmers to its youngest beginners will be shown on Shaw Cable for five evenings during September. Young athletes are shown at practices and a local swim meet sharpening their skills under the coaching of Jan Henderson, Judy Aspinatl and Join Melnikow. “This film is well worth seeing by anyone who knows a child who would benefit from an experience that is not only fun, but builds strength, character and top physical fitness,"’ said Chena Swim Club publicist Jennifer Anglin.
