Not often, mind you, most of them be- ing kid’s pap. But J do wish I had seen the item in which Laurier LaPierre went off his rocker and libelled the PNE’s Erwin Swangard and Don Bellamy. As it is, I have had to make do with the transcript. I also wish I had seen his abject apology. But I never watch LaPierre. If I want sob-sister stuff or left-wing propaganda [ can always buy some pamphlets. Besides, [ thought he was dead. It turns out, though, that he’s still churning out the same old stuff on CKVU in a program called ‘‘The People Will Talk’’. And on May 22 he stated therein that Swangard and Bellamy and other folk like them were “‘racist pigs’’ and cer- tain other unpleasant things. The item was aired after the PNE declined to display a plaque explaining in English, French and Japanese that 8,000 Japanese had passed through the PNE grounds on their way to internment during the war. And by implication, what jerks we were. The plaque suggestion came, officially, from Environment Canada, which stuck its nose into the ‘matter at the behest, no doubt, of gum-sucking federal politicians and Roy Miki’s Japanese-Canadian Citizens Association Redress Cominittee. In any event, the PNE was right to reject this idiotic overture, and LaPierre felt obliged to take up the cudgels on behalf of the downtrodden. He interviewed Miki, and Swangard was phoned during the “program to. explain why he had had the effrontery not to allow the meet manufacturers’ pollution standards. : West Vancouver District refer- red the request to the Union of B.C. He, LaPierre, would see to that. Yes. ‘‘You're going to have arguments, Swangard,”’ he stated imperiously, adding that not allowing the plaque to be put up “demonstrated a certain amount of racism on your part?’. In vain did the hapless PNE chief try to explain that he had not made any decision, that as chair- man of the board he had not even taken part in the discussion, and that it had been made by the board unanimously. As is his wont, LaPierre was too busy listening to himself. Swangard’s view, he said, was ‘‘just fun- damental racism’’. Revving his engine like mad, the people’s friend declared he would have a list of PNE board members so that the public would know the names of those who were continuing ‘‘insult and in- jury to the Japanese in this coun- try. and this city. They probably all were around clapping their hands 40 years ago when the Japanese were herded ‘into the Moody council said that ‘.,.the automobile is the largest con- tributor of all pollution in the Lower Mainland’? and added many of the vehicles on the road do not appear to be properly maintained, Since the provincial government discontinued its vehicle inspection stations, there is no facility or board that now tests vehicles for As of June 2nd, my Office will be located at: 308 HARBOUR AVENUE NORTH VANCOUVER, B.C. LaPierre’s tongue then went out of control altogether, popped right out of his head, and plunged into a dangerous fog like a drunken flier. 1 quote, affectionately: “Mr. Swangard, Bellamy and these other people are the people essentially who want us to forget the Holocaust -- the people in this country who want us to forget the deportation of the Japanese peo- ple. They’re the same bunch of racist pigs. That’s all there is to it.” Alas, that was not all there was to it. Pretty soon the phones were humming again, this time in the reverse direction and with help from the people’s lawyers. So on June 3, a somewhat less fervid Professor LaPierre was on the air with a different story. We quote, again affectionately: “The statements | made were disrespectful assertions pertaining to the board of directors of the PNE and specifically with respect to Alderman Don Bellamy and Mr. Swangard. The comments I made were untrue and I should not have made them. I wish to unequivocally retract those statements. I apologize to the board of directors of the PNE, Erwin Swangard, and Don’ Bellamy...’’. I too have a suggestion. Let a plaque be put up in the PNE in English, French and Japanese bearing LaPierre’s full apology. The peopie would love it. I just know... 7 | Vehicle testing supported Monday for Victoria to initiate a testing program to ensure vehicles safety or pollution. Ald. Van artist dies BEATRICE LENNIE, one of West Vancouver's oldest and finest artists, died last week following a lengthy art career spanning de- cades of work. Lennie was 82. One of the West Vancouver ar- tist’s influences was Marega, the sculptor who created the famous lions that guard the south end of the Lions Gate Bridge. “She was actually working with him on the lions,’’ said longtime friend and former student Shirley Thomas. Lennie’s works include murals and sculptured panels in the Hotel Vancouver, the Shaughnessy Hos- pital and the dedication plaque on the Pattullo Bridge.
