LIFEBOAT MOORING _— Dear Editor: Being the subject of Doug Col- lins’ Nov. 21 column, perhaps | am best qualified to fill in’ the gaps. Under the press of deadlines there isn't a columnist in the world that can precisely cover all bases. For instance, Collins said the W7-foot B.C. Lifeboat Society (BCLS) boat was 16 feet long. In spite of this ‘terror’’ Collins, as usual, got it straight. My opinion, that an open boat with outboard motor is not an all-weather rescue vessel, — still stands. And that is why the 700- horsepower 28-foot Donzi, that was designed and built for rugged off-shore racing, is so desperately needed for these waters. There is, however, also a need for a smaller, fast-response boat, which the brave and dedicated members of the North Shore BCLS station employ so efficiently. Collins’ main thrust was his surprise that the West Vancouver Yacht Club (WVYC) priorities did not allow the Canadian Lifeboat Institution to continue to moor at its float. After all, we have been there for some 10 years under prior management in gratitude for our voluntary activities over the past 17 years. This is the only perk we got | have enjoyed fer our long, and personally costly, community ser- vice, The BCLS is an excellent resource in marine search and rescue as is the CLI and, of course, the federally-funded Canadian Marine Rescue Auxiliary (Coast Guard Auxiliary).
