FORMER COLLEGE INSTRUCTOR
TO EXHIBIT ART IN POLAND

ONE OF Capilano College’s first instructors will return to
the town of his birth in 1988 to hold a one-man exhibition
celebrating a 50-year art career.

Stephen Leskard, 65, will travel
to Lublin, Poland, the town where
at age 17 he first exhibited two oil
paintings and embarked on an art

“LT will probably take some of
my sculptures, paintings, drawings
and etchings,’ Teskard said in an
interview.

In 1940, Leskard joined the
Polish Army in France and fought
the invading German forces in
France, Belgium and Holland.
After the Second World War, he
began studies at St. Martin's
School of Artin London.

“That's where | started art,”
said Leskard, who now lives in
Vancouver.

Arriving in Canada in 1949, the
artist's first job was a long way
from teaching art. ‘fl was pruning
the trees in an apple orchard," he
recalled.

the evenings.

Leskard’s first Canadian exhib-
ition was in Oshawa, Ont.

The year 1953 saw the family
move from Ontario to Vancouver,
where Leskard later taught art at
Emily Carr School of Art and
Design, and Vancouver Communi-
ty College.

“! started the art program (at
Capilano College) in 1969 and was
head of that for four years,’’ he
said. After that. his teaching ran
the gamut from design to drawing
to commercial art.

Leskard, who retired from
teaching in 1984, is movirs to
Kelowna at the end of the month.
He said he has no plans to teach at
a school in the area — “privately
maybe.""

The retrospective exhibition is
sponsored by Poland's Society of
the Friends of Fine Art.
