22 - Friday, September 5, 1986 - North Shore News MORE THAN A BANQUET HALL Canyon Gardens offers dining for every taste and occasion ANY self-respecting North Ender knows somebody who has had their wedding recep- tion there. And because of that matrimo- nial rencwn, the Canyon Gardens, 3382 Capilano Road, has become much more than simply a restau- rant. It has become the North Shore’s unofficial marital laun- ching pad. The restaurant’s Alpine and Ridgewood rooms have hosted over 6,000 wedding receptions since current owner Ray Marinakis took over the location in 1967. A portion of that 6,000, reproduced in colorful eight by 10s, is proudly displayed in a Can- yon Gardens’ marital hall of fame in the corridors leading to the two reception rooms. It is a staggering display of blushing brides and rented tux- edos. Because of its extracurricular activities, the Canyon Gardens is billed as a full-blown entertuin- ment centre. True to that mandate, the place never rests. It runs flat out for 365 days each year, ringing in New Years, rolling out red carpets and reeling in its regular clientele. There are close to 200 seats in Canyon Gardens’ main restaurant, its bistro and its new non-smoking table hopping Timothy Renshaw Garden Air lounge. Food offered is a fairly standard selection of steak, seafood and salad. Entrees are concentrated in the $12 to $17 range. For the chronically indecisive or the virtually unfillable, the Canyon Gardens also features a good buf- fet. Roast beef, chicken breasts, salads, Chinese dishes, Greek ap- petizers and various desserts are all available in any portion and in any quantity for a set $16.50 buffet price. RESTAURANT 235 - 15th Street, West Van a Lunch Monday-Friday 11:00-3pm 926-6861 | Dinner Monday-Sunday 5:30-11pm | My wife, struck temporarily dumb at the sight of such edible opulence, immediately signed up for an open-ended buffet ticket. It was the last I saw of her for several hours. From the regular menu, I tried a Shrimp with Papaya and Proscuit- to ($5.95). The dish was an_ excellent opener, featuring a small pyramid of sweet papaya slices laid careful- ly around a mound of fresh shrimp and chewy proscuitto, the reigning king of hams. With a bottle of Christian Brothers Cabernet Sauvignon ($19.50) for company, I tested Canyon Gardens’ New York Steak ($15) with peppercorn sauce ($1 extra). Meat was cooked somewhat beyond rare specifications, but, overall, was juicy. The peppercorn sauce was suitably pungent and mined with a goodly number of explosive corns. The restaurant’s new non-smok- ing section, filled with bracing Capilano River air, is a welcome sanctuary for the growing numbers of vocal smoke-weary folk. For those with dine and dance ambitions, Canyon Gardens’ bistro features the internationally mellow stylings of 3 of a Kind. The Canyon Gardens serves up good basic food amidst North Shore coniferous grandeur — for weddings, wingdings and casual dining.
