The first stop 1s a Burnaby toy wholesaler where tour participants are issued membership cars to be able to purchase items at discount rates. This outlet offers toys of every type, as well as Christmas decorations, wrap- ping paper, rmbbon, and stocking stuffers On the first tour several weeks ago Gannon says she was apprehensive about the reaction to the places she'd chosen as shopping destina- tions, but quickly realized she had no worries. “People went crazy.’ she says im amazement When they arrived at the first stop the manager handed out gar- bage bags to the shoppers. **It was quite something to see these ladies dragging the yellow and black bags around the store just stuffing them. All the Christmas ornaments were on for halt) price, and we just cleaned them out. There was nothing left but a bare wall'’’ Gannon guarantees, however, that the store will be fully restocked in time for future tours. At the second. stop, Wicker and Brass in south Burnaby, even the bus driver gol into the act , buying $150 worth of brass and asking Gannon to make sure she re- quested him as the driver on the rest of her tours Gannon admits she is ‘‘a compulsive shopper who has bargain shopped around the world.” Her expertise on jocal bargain spots increased as she helped author Anne Garber research the recently published Vancouver Super Shopper. With support from Garber and her own hus- band, Gannon took a leave of absence from her hbranan job at Bradshaw Elementary School in Langley to start her shopping tour company. But) Gannon’s husband wasn't always thrilled with her bargain-hunting ways They married within a month of meeting and were im- mediately confronted by their different buying attitudes. “He was the type who went into Woodwards once a year to buy underwear, socks and shirts,’’ she says. ‘‘When we went to buy furniture for the house, | thought he was going to leave me."’ Her new spouse was aghast when she started haggling with the fur- niture salesman at a major department store. But her bargaining know- how got them a $2,000 suite for just $1,200. ‘*l think at that point he decided he'd probably keep me because he saw | was economical,’’ she laughs. Gannon plans to continue Deals on Wheels throughout the year with other theme tours such as a springtime fashion tour, a home decorating tour, and another that focuses on children’s needs.
