he news that Rafe Mair had been bounced
from CJOR was not all that surprising.
Nearly everybody has been bounced from
CJOR, including my humble self. At ’OR, the wise
man takes his escape route with him when he enters
the door. As that self-made multi-millionaire Roy
Thomson Jr., put it when the Ottawa Journal was
closed, everyone must make his own way in the

world.

What was surprising about
the event was its timing.
Radio stations usually wait
until new ratings are knowr
before they tell their stars
that the weather is bad and
that the price of bread has
gone up. But it will be some
weeks before the spring
ratings are available.

Besides, Mair has two
months to go on his contract,
which means they'll have to
pay him about $26,000 for
doing nothing. That could be

soul who should have been a
parson. In the fall ratings,
Mair had an audience of
28,900 to Bannerman’s
39,500. That was in the 9 am
to 12 noon period, when they
were head to head. From 8:30
to 9, before Bannerman came
on, Mair did rather better,
with a peak of 37,400. But
the gap between him and

CKNW was even greater,’

Mind you, Mair can pro-
perly complain that CJOR’s
dreadful early morning mish-
mash — devised by the shin-
ing Gold — did nothing to
help him. When Bannerman
comes on at 9 a.m., the sta-
tion's audience in the
preceding period has been at
times, nudging 100,000.
When Mair made his debut at
8:30, CJOR had no more
than 30,000. So there was lit-
tle inheritance. Gold was also
responsible for injecting Fan-
ny Kiefer’s totally different
style into the Mair show for
an hour a day, which ts weird
programming.

Station sources say that
Mair wanted more holidays
(eight weeks instead of six),
that he thought he should
drop his commentary, and
that he was asking for more
dough. If he did demand
more money, if was screwy of
him, since he was already be-
ing paid $158,000 a year for
being in an indifferent place
on the ratings ladder. But he
denies he asked for more -
“‘unless you interpret) my

ander Haig. Or the Pope.
