B10 - Sunday, May 6, 1984 - North Shore News New use for coal in war on pollution COAL USED as a combust:- ble fuel has long been viewed as a major contributor to earth’s worsening pollution problems. Now, however, research at Simon” Fraser University 1s producing pro- mising results by employing coal as a filter to protect the environment. The project, headed by Dr. Samia Fadl, a joint appointee to the department of kinesiology and the faculty of engineering science, has revealed that the same chemical components of coal that pollute when burned are effective in promoting bon- ding with toxic materials found in many types of in- dustrial and municipal effluents. ‘*Testing to date indicates cause for great optimism,”’ says Fadl. ‘‘The coal filtra- tion system has been suc- cessful in removing almost 100 per cent of the con- taminants from effluens ex- pellied by metal processing plants, and 70-80 per cent of those effluents from pulp and paper mills, sewage treatment plants, meat packing houses and oil refineries.’ The coal used by Fad! ts lignite, softest of the coal varteties and available cheap- ly and in great abundance from BC's Hat Creek development lt has been known for years that ac tivated carbon is an effective filtration agent but at a cost of about $1,000 per ton is too expensive for large-scale use Hat Creek lignite is worth on In about $28 $30 per ton Due to the fact that tigmite is low in cdloritic value and bigh on ash content moras not popular for use ain Chertnal peneratiuny plants, but badls tesearch has tutned even this deticten ey unto a plus oA bed ot crusted cowl on Stalled ata Rac biverndd create pacha plarit oo EY a tras been monitored ever sine c Data te hate stows that ef Hhaecnts tlasted over the ted establish oan iiterestinp set perpecludtip process whereby Hatiutally occurruip Dae teria th owarter Peed on thre cae bern Oxypent anmeb ruiteopers oy thye coal amd oor the tain warstes combarmed i the et Hlacnt Pte diving bacteria an (uti frepenerate the sar tac orf the aa Hew the te orpanusmas Chbtive and the whole ovyede repeats asel ania prc ess hrrerwee as Urcoberpers al oxidation And when the ooal Hilter as finally ceplaced atte seven to LO wears the otpatin protbartanits abyscrtee dd derctele thie cer Se thor bae vadne trove G OM Ee Om EEL SS Ko. dintuestael Leena bedava sewage phan a ote tations wh pete ean “OV vad breety warbler: coh wort) habs + brea Cab tbat Paswe sae bei Ve aed oot te gat wot reobhurse ad ha uy vyveldepee aees pre dies Vay Fable bevel OM serps aliyyes tf or weit I, i \ Me pettad fevaed wig 1, { Sean Cl val files thas ral polars “ a atrert bre co per ob bey Moa CT Oe core fends ated as warstred sertes sewers by fat Current tee moot tethods allow the bead \ Yoouyyt and lakes (0 polson aquatic life. Fadl has a tentative design and patent for a large filtra- tion system and given the results from initial studies hopes to be able to secure the necessary funds from govern- ment or private industry to finance full-scale tests. Several possibilities are pen- ding, including one with the Caroline Gold Mill at Hope, the Alberta government's Oil Sands Technology and Research Authority and a third through the U.S.A.’s Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) which has in- tormed Fad! that it expects final approval soon on her application for $150,000 to build a prototype filter for a metal processing plant in Los Angeles. The way the coal reacts with toxic metals ts entirely different than the process which removes organic wastes but it is almost as ef- fective and equally = in- teresting in that tt lessens pollution while also pro- viding a novel way of mining. Fadl explains: ‘‘Through the use of intrared spec- troscopy we found = that hgnite contains carboxyls and phenol hydroxy! funcnonal groups which have negative charges, that bind strongly with the positively charged metal ions By running mine of metal tinishing plant et (luents oxen coal, toxic metals such as (cause of the Minamata disease), TCEOUEY dreaded lead, Copper. zine. cad miu and germane ceaed chemically and cling too the See page B13 y Employment Opportunity COMMISSION SALES FLOOR COVERINGS We require a commission sales person tor.our floor cover- ing department in our Park Royal store We are looking tor a self-motivated sales -oriented individual who ts interested in above average earnings Preference will be given to ap- plicants with previous Commission sales experience in this area This iS a full-time position offering a guaranteed draw and comprehensive benetit package Please submit resume or apply in person Monday Thurs day.2pm to4pm Personnel Office (2nd Floor) Woodward Stores Ltd. 725 Park Royal West Vancouver, B.C.
