Young members of the Squamish Indian Band contemplate the future of the site of the Capilano Longhouse which burned to the ground last weekend, dreaming of the building they would like to build as a replacement. Some of them long to see a traditional longhouse in its place, of the type built by their ancestors, but the longhouse committee says the band has previously rejected any requests for funding for such a project. Some of the members still have the ambition to build a longhouse of hewn cedar logs and are appealing for help in the form of lumber, tools, and other building supplies. Anyone wishing to help with supplies is asked to call Mark at 985-2005 and those wishing to contribute cash should call treasurer Gloria Nahanee at 988-0119. Volunteer jabor is needed at all levels - from muscle work to surveying. (Elisworth Dickson photo) District won’t tolerate vandalism FROM PAGE A1 meeting after the idea of a reward had been raised by the News as a result of a Suggestion by one of the community organizations based at the hall. Bell says the reward is intended to help the RCMP in their investigation of the attack and that information from anyone who is induced to call the police will be treated with stmct con- fidentiality. The reward will be paid to anyone who offers. the RCMP information leading to the apprehension and conviction of the persons or persons responsible for the damage to the hall. Bell said the vandalism, in which hardly a single item belonging to the four groups using the hail - the St. John’s Ambulance, Red Cross, Big Brothers and North Shore Association for the Physically Handicapped was spared from destructios, was the worst he had ever seen. He commented on the intention of the reward: “Itis to show that the municipality is serious ‘about opposing acts .>f vandalism, par- ticularly to the degree and nature of this case. We are not prepared to tolerate this kind of wanton destruction. “T think it will tell both the residents and the people involved — that the municipality is aware of the problem and is not going to stand back and do nothing about it. “And if we have continued incidents of this we will have to review what other steps we should take.” The St. John’s Ambulance group, which says it was the hardest hit of the organizations which used the hall, is appealing for help in recovering losses estimated at $10,000. Chairman of the North Shore branch Howard Maundrelle called the News and said the group had in- surance for $3,000 on tn- structional equipment only. “We have lost $5-7,000 in training supphes,” he said. “But the replacement value would be closer to $10,000. We lost everything.” In the attack, the vandals broke down the door to the St. John's storage area and tore apart the contents. Among the items destroyed were three dolls for teaching lifesaving techniques, initially believed to have belonged to the Red Cross group. Other ruined equipment included oxygen cylinders, 16 m.m. sound films, instructional charts, text books and uniforms for members. Maundrelle said: “We lost all our equipment in_ the fire.” Whereas the North Shore St. John’s is making arrangements to continue operating, using equipment loaned from a Vancouver group, it will have to find new equipment of its own. Maundrelle appeals for anyone wishing to help to send donations to group secretary Ruth Gilevish, at 208-2710 Lonsdale Avenue, North Vancouver.
