Politeness © prevails, and the customer is made \ to feel the master of the house, . rather:thani, ‘as in some restaurants, an intruder; : ‘ ” Greetings to arriving customers . are delivered uniformly fram all the restaurant staff, not just the designated front man. Also * delivered are hot ore-dining . towels, with which to wipe away the physical and psychological grime ri ihe outside world before filling the system with clean fres Complimentary green teas, demure waitresses and gracious manners are also part of the basic Japanese dining package. ° -: All ef the above works to set the “system at ease and make a.work- _a-day body feel respected and at -. “home. it also does a pretty good: _jod of sharpening the appetite. "Alisa delivers a of the Japanese basics and more. 6 ‘Itopened in early August in the mid-Lonsdale location formerly occupied by the Nairobi, an ele- gant purveyor of interesting Afri- can and East Indian cuisine that had a goad six-year run but: Timothy Renshaw TABLE HOPPING faltered in 1992. Alisa is a welcome Nairobi replacement, not only for Japanese food fans, but for the whole mid- ‘Lonsdale area, which needs every _ molecule of inspiration and diver- sity it can attract. it has replaced the Nairobi’s slightly dingy African twilight decor.with the sunny and sym- °° metrical interior of a modern jap- anese restaurant. : A smail six-seater sushi bar an- chors a main dining room of - booths and tables. . Nairobi’s poetic menu of curries, vindaloos and other Indian/African dishes has given way to a full menu of traditional Japanese sushis, sashimis, tempuras, teriyakis, rice and noodle dishes. Alisa‘s prices ave reasonable.: Sushis (Plate, Maki and Tekamaki _are all available) and sashimis (Tuna, Salmon, Geoduck, Red Snapper) range from $2 to $13, with most below the $8 mark. Other main dishes are similarly priced and include everything from Vegetable Tempura ($5.50) to Nabeyaki Udon ($6.50) and Salmon Teriyaki and Tempura . {$13.50, which covers the cost of Miso Soup, sunomono, California . No stress, no withdrawal, no drugs. Calm, relaxin, basics and more roll, rice and ice cream side dishes). Alisa’s Dinner Box provides diners with a meal of Miso Soup, assorted tempura, chicken, beef or salmon teriyaki, a California Roll, Yakisoba, sunomono, rice and fruit for $10.95. - The restaurant also offers a goo selection of appetizers, soups and salads. . Portions are substantial, and the variety of the sushi combination ~ plates is good. : . Our reals on a recent Friday night began with small bow!s of Miso Soup and green tea. Chilled Asahi beer accompanied a feast of Plate (basic) and Maki (rof}) sushi. Standouts were the Vancouver Special Roll — which packed prawn, salmon, crab, smoked sal- “mon, avocado and cucumber into a roll of sticky sushi rice and fish _foe — and the Spicy Re!l — which . combined tuna and salmon ina semi-sweet and mildly hot sauce in the same sushi rice and fish roe package. _AS a new restaurant, Alisa’s at- mosphere is in the developmental _Stage. But already it has an infor-~ mal neighborly feel that is attrac- ting residents irom the immediate ~- area. The restaurant's staff is fresh, new and occasionally disorganiz- ed, but their uniform politeness and eagerness to please campen- sate for any of the shortcomings of inexperience. Alisa has added another good ‘restaurant to the mid-Lonsdale ! THUNDERBIRD LANES area and thereby provided another - good reason for travellers and diners to venture north of 3rd Street.
