RUNNING through the
mud with a bicycle on your
back might not be every-
one’s idea of fun, but 19
year old Brent Mudry of
West Vancouver thinks it’s a
great sport.

Cyclo-Cross is the name of
the sport, and it’s a special
winter-designed bike racing
bit of endurance only for the
truly fit.

Cyclo-Cross is a specialized
form of bike racing that is usu-
ally set up to include gravel
and mud stretches, odstacles
such as logs and streams, steep
uphill stretches and includes
areas where the biker must
carry his bike and run.

The “sport” is relatively
new to North America but big
in Europe both at the amateur
and professional levels.

The tough winter sport
came about for bikers who
normally would be out of luck
with competitions for the win-
ter months and it has become
an excellent way to stay fir.

Brent has represented B.C.
at the past three national road
and track championships in
the summer, and apart from
1979, when a knee injury
forced him to the sidelines, he
has been racing cyclo-crass for
four years. ;

The young West Van racer
trains reguiarly and will be
preparing for the upcoming
road racing season with his
aims of making that big jump
to the international level boi
with the more orthodox rac-
ing and the winter cyclo-cross.

of at least two Beatles fans
since the death of John
Lennon, is begging the slain
rock star’s followers not to
yield to despair.

“Pm just atraid
that instead of what
John and I believed
in, pcople will think
of his death as the
end of something,”
Miss Ono said in an
interview with the
New York Daily
News.

“They are send-
ing me telegrams
saying this is the
end of an era and
everything. But it
was just starting,
and we know that
the °80s is up to
each one of us.”

Chapman, the
Beatles fanatic
accused of killing
Lennon, is under a
suicide watch him-
self in a Manhattan
psychiatric hospital.

Ono called for a
10-minute — silent
prayer vigil for the
slain rock star at 2
p.m. EST Sunday,
“wherever vou are.”

Lennon’s body
was cremated
Wednesday and
there will be no
funeral service.
