Ministry says From page 1 But he said that, through negotiations, the mill and ministry are making sufficient progress towards resolving nitrogen oxide and particulate issues at the plant. “Therefore, we didn’t feel prosecution would provide any benefit to the situation,” he said. Nitrogen oxide undergoes reactions in the atmosphere to produce nitrogen dioxide, a pungent reddish-brown gas that’s been implicated in respiratory disease and the ere- ation of acid rain. Robb said that air monitoring shows there is not a sig- nificant impact from the mill’s sulphur dioxide emissions even though the permit has been exceeded. And, he added, the mill does better than all other B.C. mills for sulphur emissions. “It’s tough to justify the court given that het, and gi mills have a sulphur dio: limit,” said Rob! But Jacks said the mill’s one air monitoring station doesn’t tell the whole story. The pollutants go into the air and water somewhere, he added. Jacks said Howe Sound should be the best mill by far because it’s so close to the third-most-populated urban area in Canada. Jacks is being supported in his efforts against the Canfor and New Oji Paper Company-owned mill by the West Coast Environmental Law Association. A Howe Sound spokesman said he could not comment on Jacks’ legal action because the company has no infor- mation on it. “We are the cleanest mill in B.C. and one of the cleanest in the world,” said environment superinten- dent Al Strang. House Sound Pulp and Paper has applied for a in its permit for nitrogen oxide and sulphur dios sions. But the company adds it does not intend to emissions if the amendment is approved. Robb expects a decision on the application to be made in May. West Vancouver-Garibaldi Liberal MLA Ted Nebbeling said he supports a 600-signature petition asking the envi- ronment minister not to approve the permit application. — jan@usnews.com ense of taking (the mill) to the facet virtually no ot increase ¢ emis- increase Park land granted in memory of brothers FOURTEEN year, after they were trayi ly killed by a Lions Bay debris flow, the provin- cial governmeut has granted land for a park in the memory of David and Tom Wade.
