But North Shore Health medical
health officer Dr. Brian O'Connor
said the nurses demands are
believed to be too costly.

O’Connor sits on the employer
bargaining team as a North Shore
Union Board of Health representa-
tive, but he is not a labor-relations
expert in the dealings.

He said the GVRD bargaining
group wants to see how the provin-
cial government will setde with
community health nurses it
employs in arcas such us Surrey,
Kelowna, Terrace and Prince
George before the GVRD makes
further proposals.

Said O’Connor, “We are still
meeting (with the nurses” bargain-
ing team). We have got four meet-
ings scheduled in March.”

Community health nurses work
in home care, long-term care
assessment and public-health nurs-
ing.

The strike vote was the first
taken in the North Shore nurses‘
50-year history.

Community health nurses in
Richmond voted 85%. Vancouver
voted 80% and Burnaby 79% in
favor of strike action last month.

McPherson said community
health nurses are slated to become
an important part of the provincial
government's New Directions
health-care policy.
