‘Vote No’ on BC Tel’s
rate increase proposal

Dear Editor:

dare to ask for a 45% increase in
salary?

Shaw Cable employees were
forced to settle for a 1% increase
for each of the next four years!

And yet, the proposed increase
by BC Tel to North and West
Vancouver residents of $5.45 per
month for toll-free calls for three
zones (Bowen Island 9
Aldergrove) represents a 45.2%
increase,

When Bell Telephone (Ontario)
submitted its increase proposal to
CRTC and were turned down,
they countered with a proposal to
lay off 5,000 employecs.

Would this be the reaction of
BC Tel also?

AS @ retired senior citizen on a
fixed income, | do not need this
extra $5.45 (plus tax) added to my
phone bill.

Hopefully, there are many more
North Shore residents who feel as
I do and will vote No on this pro-
posal when they receive the ref-
erendum ballots in November,

Thank heaven for men like our
ex-minister of finance, Clarke,
who pians to take BC Tel to court
over this issue.

No restrictions against
running for both offices

As a candidate running for the
schoo] board in West Vancouver,
1 would like to clarify why, ini-
tially, my name stood for both the
‘board and council.

Candidates can, in fact, legally

‘tun for and hold both offices;
there is no restriction on doing so
under the Municipai. Act.

The restriction in West Van-
couver is created by the current
schcol board itself, which has
consistently voted against holding
its meetings on a different evening
from council, as is the case in
most other districts.

Effectively, the current board is
disallowing the citizens of West
Vancouver the right to attend doth

Trevor Lautens in a recent col-
umn also commented on the ‘‘ex-
tremely inconvenient timing “Of
board meetings on the same night
that council meets — it appears to
convenience the authorities, | not
the public.”’

By standing for both positions,
1 simply wished to point up what
is a characteristically cavalier and
dismissive ‘attitude on the part of
the current board that effectively
denies all members of the public
fuli access to it.

if elected,. my first item of
business would be to change the
situation and move board
meetings to a different night from
council.
