Nat’! starts to rebound in ’94 TOTAL NATIONAL housing starts are forecast to reach 156,300 units this year and rebound to 170,400 units in 1994, reported ‘Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) in its third-quarter National Housing Outlook, releascd in September. “Housing markets in 1994 are expected to benefit from improved economic condi- tions, a more stable job outioek, and the extension of the five per cent down, first Home Loan Insurance ‘program,’’ said Gilles Pro- ulx, chief economist of CMHC’s Market Analysis Centre. *“*Both = single-detached and multiple units will re- cord higher start levels in 1994. Stronger resale activity next year will benefit single starts, while multiple starts will rise as a result of stronger demand in Ontario and Quebec for con- dorniniums,’’ Proulx added. Construction of single- detached dwellings will jump 10.9% to 95,800 units in 1994, while multiple starts will increase 6.9 per cent to 74,709 units next year. In 1994, an improving economy and a reduction in surplus units, in response to stronger demand in the multiples sector, will boost starts in Ontario and Quebec. Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Nova Scotia and P.E.I. will also ride an up- ward trend. B.C., Alberta and New Brunswick will see slightly Jower activity. Starts in Newfoundland will remain near the 1993 level. Resale activity will be similar to she new housing market, Move-up buyers are ex- pected to return in greater numbers in most provincial markets in 1994 as full-time employment opportunities improve.
