GENERAL MOTORS chairman Robert Stempei an-
nounced Monday that 16,000 workers in Canada and the
U.S. would lose their jobs in the next three years
because of plant closures associated with the car manu-
facturer’s record $4.5 billion loss in 1991. North Ameri-
can car manufacturers insist their products are as good
as the more expensive Japanese imports on the market

today. But they say consumers are stow to change their
negative views of North American cars based on experi-
ences with earlies models. Consumer groups have criti-
cized North American car manufacturers for producing
cars that don’t meet the needs of most consumers. The
recession nas also contributed to poss car sales.
