R EMEMBER BEING seven years old? Sure you do — How about advanced quantum physics? If you were an all-around renaissance kid like second-grader Fred Tate {Adam Hann-Byrd), you can skip Dr. Seuss. Ah, but the gift of genius carries a stiff price tag. Every headline about war or the evironment ag- gravates his ulcer. He has nightmares about waking up in a Van Gogh painting or sud- denly aging from a defective gland secretion. And only Fred and his mother Dede (Jodie Foster) witness the dismal attendance at his birth- day party. As a single parent, she tries hard, making up for the meagre finances with lavish attention. Still, as lov- ing as she is, Mom can’t provide the mental stimulation he craves. That’s where Dr. Jane Grierson (Dianne Wiest) and her institute for child prodigies comes in. And where Dede reluctantly steps out. Fortunately for us that allows Jodie Foster to slip behind the camera and demonstrate her con- siderable directing skills. It’s a Hollywood axiom that you never work with kids, but the natural performance she coaxes out of newcomer Hann-Byrd is richly textured and emotionally honest. Dietrich complained that Smily had painted her nose too short. “Marlene said she knew her nose really well because she had been painting her face (with makeup) all her life.’’ That's the challenge about por- trait-painting: capturing a person’s essence only to have your subject complain it doesn’t look like them. There are far greater expectations than, say, landscape painting — haystacks, after all, don’t quibble. And that’s partly why Smily says she’s going to be much more selective about future commis- sions. “It’s very stressful because, for one thing, | have to keep talking to my subjects in order to keep tham looking alive. If you have someone just sitting there for an extended period of time, their face falls and it doesn’t look like them anymore. “At this stage of my life | want to get what I’m worth. I'd rather be poorer than take work | don’t really want to do.” CUSTOM SHIRTMAKERS JUST ARRIVED! A caustic, caped math whiz (P.J. Ochlan) whose genius with numbers exceeds his social skills, is literally knocked out of the movie, while singer Harry Conick ford, jr. displays an easy charm taking freshman Fred under his wing at college before beating a hasty retreat. Writer Scott Frank has a solid knack for creating characters that breathe. But the real star is Jodie Foster. She not only executes the difficult task of directing herself, but she tackles a fascinating subject with brisk economy, humor and sensi- tivity, Little Man Tate is a terrific debut.
