Bell leads WV to third THREE NORTH Shore high schools placed in rhe top 10 for the fourth time since 1986 at the B.C. high school track and field championships May 31 and June 1} at Swangard Stadium. This is the second-best showing for North Shore teams since the modern era of the B.C. meet began in 1967 (in 1981 Hand- sworth was first, Carson Graham third and Hillside fifth). West) Vancouver Highlanders, although disappointed in not sup- fiying a greater challenge to defending champion Queen Elizabeth of Surrey, rade the all- around effort of Grade $1 stalwart Erin Bell to third place with 98 points, 40 of which she had a hand in (or maybe that should read a leg in). Pleasant-surprise Handsworth Royals garnered fourth with 95 points, 5} coming in the final six events of the 39-event meet. Sentinel Spartans, who relied on the efforts of younger athletes to win the North Shore meet, were seventh with 48. Almost 160 schools qualified entries for the meet. Bell won the heptathion (100- metre hurdles, high jump, shot put, 2C0-metres, long lump, jave- lin, &00-metres) the previous weekend with a total of 4,188 points accumulated from the seven events, then won the individual long jump at 5.21 metres by tak- ing the lead and increasing it on her last two atrempts, placed se- coad in the 100-metre hurdles and third in the high jump. She also ran on the 4x100-metre relay that came fourth and the 4x400-mctre team that was eighth. Notable among other Shore performers were North Hand- piace HIGH SCHCOL SPORTS sworth'’s Jane Oddy, Bryan Jet- fers anc James Leishman, and Windsor’s Linsday McLaren, Oddy wou the 1,500 metres in 4:38.34, about five seconds faster than second-place McLaren who had besten her at the North Shore meet, then returned 90 minutes later to win the 800 metres in 2:13.59 and achieve a difficult double that has been done only ence before (by Handsworth’s Lori Durward last year). And the Grade 1: middle distance runner wasn't finished. She anchored Handsworth’s win- ning 43x400-metre Katherine Donsrvan, Melissa Hall and Laara Banner in 3:59.67. McLaren herself was attempting another rare double triumph that has occurred just once in 10 years after taking the 3,000 metres the previous day in 10:16.78, slightly off her North Shore meet record. Jeffery, a multi-talented Grade JI, won the pole vault at 3.80 metres, finished third in the 400-metre hurdles and sixth in the decathlon (100-metres, long jump, shot put, high jump, 400-metres, 110-metre hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin, 1,500-metres). Leishman, also in Grade 11. was second in the 400-metre hur- dies and third in the 110-metre hurdles. Leishman and Jeffery then teamed up with Erie Dier and Rob Ferguson to form an_ all- Grade 11 4«400-metre relay that came second in 3:29.64 (they'll have their eyes on the North Shore record in 1992) in the tradi- relay of ¢ day. tionally-exching final race of the meet. West Vancouver's Dan Thomp- son was third and fourth in the always competitive 200 and 100 metres events and ran the last leg of the third-place 4x400-metre team. And how about Sentinel's Amanda Johnsen? Only in Grade 8 and the holder of the North Shore bantam triple jump record which is better than all three older age division marks, she leaped 16.73 metres for a second in the triple jump and 5.14 metres for a third in the long jump. And another Sentinel bantam, Joanna Armour, was sixth and Johnsen eighth in the gruetling heptathlon. SASS NEWS photo 14th Annual Sailing Race.
