About 800 people braved wet
and windy weather last Sunday to
watch the two-time CSL champion
86ers edge the national team 2-1.

A benefit for the Lions Gate
Hospital Foundation, the game
raised nearly $3,000 through ad-
mission, food and beer sales and a
prize draw.

“The idea behind it was it was a
family day and it went great. There
had to be SO kids running around
the field during half-time playing
scrub soccer,’ Palmer said.

After a scoreless first half,
Olympic centre Bill Connor scored
at the 50-minute mark before the
86ers tied the score 11 minutes
later on a powerhouse goal by
Doug Muirhead.

In the 81st minute, 86er Rob
Ciccone, who also plays for the
national team when he is not play-
ing for the 86ers, netted the win-
ning goal.

Spectators saw a strong North
Shore contingent among the
players, including 86ers midfielder
Jim Easton and North Van-
couver’s Scott Macey, who was
making his debut with the 86ers.

after playing for B.C. at the
Canada Games along with North

Soccer game raises $3,000 for foundation

played for the national team Sun-
day.

Locais also made their mark on
the preliminary game as the North
Shore-based Sportsmen All-Stars
defeated the visiting Okanagan
all-star team 4-2.

Sportsmen Peter Wortman
opened the scoring five minutes in-
to the game, and the score remain-
ed 1-0 until the second half when
the visitors scored on two penalty
shots.

But centre forward Mike Penn-
ington evened the score for the
Sportsmen. Wortman then scored
two consecutive goals to nail down
the victory for the North Shore
side.

Palmer, president of the Sport-
smen League, said the two games
showed the remarkable soccer tal-
ent the North Shore has developed.

The only wrinkle in the Sports-
men’s game came when their
goaikeeper John Adams broke his
leg below the left knee in the se-
cond half,
