Ten excellent self-guided nature and history walk brochures on the Stanley Park area have been pro- duced hy the Vancouver Lifeforce Foundation. Each guide takes walkers on a different tour through park trails, many of which may not be famil- iar to readers. Historical points of interest are noted as well as the natural phenomena one might en- counter along the route. Even if you think it’s still too chilly to venture out in the woods, the pamphiets make interesting ecological] armchair information. ECOINFO And speaking of ‘‘chilly,’* Safeway has published a number of cold-weather environment tips in an Environmental Options brochure called Winter. Included are home, car and garden tips, as well as the follow- ing information on making your fireplace festivities at feast a little bit more eco-friendly. ® Upgrade your fireplace with the addition of an airtight stove or fireplace insert, which can increase fireplace efficiency by as much as 50 per cent. There are two types of inserts, a flush front mount variety and a special stove insert that sits in front of the fireplace opening. ¢ Burn only well-seasoned wood in your fireplace. It's more effi- cient and creates less pollution. The build-up of toxic wood tars known as creosote in the chimney is also decreased, lessening the chance of chimney fires and reducing the frequency of clean- ing. Or as an alternative, environment-friendly fireplace logs. Those using the ‘‘Clean Burn" technology emit !ess carbon dioxide and monoxide than burn- ing wood. e Avoid burning scrap or Painted woods, chipboard or par- ticle board, or creosote-soaked wood or lumber. These may release lead, formaldehyde and other harinful poijlutants when burned. * Burning light cardboard, newsprint and advertising flyers could release harmful emissions into the air. But he voted against the city task force, arguing that without any terms of reference, he didn't know what he was voting for. While the district. report was worthwhile, he said it provided no new information, adding that the city could take action, with minimal public input, by using some of these obvious ideas. Mayor Jack Loucks suggested taking a North Shore-wide ap- proach on environmental issues through a round-table discussion. He said it *‘dida’t make sense to have three different commit- tees.” But Loucks voted in favor of the city community committee. Sharp, who introduced the mo- tion calling for the committee, suggested that while discussions with the other municipalities should not be excluded, city resi- dents may have other concerns or priorities. The committee can add or omit ideas from the district report, and that public input can be helpful at the policy and planning or round-table levels, she added. Barbara Perrault, agreeing that some of the ideas in the district Teport were simplistic, but she ad- ded that sometimes simplistic ideas are the best ideas. Ald. John Braithwaite asked Sharp if the committee was in- tended as an ongoing entity or simply zo deat with the district task force report. Sharp said that the extent cf the committee’s involvement would be to provide input to the environ- ment report.
