DEC. 11: The Christmas Party of
the Western Canadian Designess
and Fashion Association will be
held at the New World Harbour-
side Hotel starting at 7:30 p.m.
The evening will include a fashion
show featuring several designers
with a special appearance by Ron
Leal, the senior designer for Mr.
Jax. Tickets are $25 per person

10-12: Historical costume
expert Ivan Sayers presents his
historical fashions show at the
Pacific Centre Atrium on three
consecutive evenings. The curator
of the Vancouver museum and the
creator of its Panache exhibition,
Sayers will make two 40-minute
presentations each night, one at 7
p.m. and one at 8 p.m. Sayers’
presentations focus on the socio-
economic factors that influence
fashion, symbolizing the gradual
emancipation of women. The
shows are free to the public.

is presenting a fashion-oriented
exhibit called Panache: 200 years
of the Fashionable Woman.
Created by Ivan Sayers, the exhib-
it explores the socio-economic his-
tory behind the costumes women
have worn over the centuries. The

Lustre is a deep inner glow
which only real pearls have,

for lustre in the shadowed areas
of the pearl, so that you don’t
mistake surface shininess for true
lustre.

Generally, the larger the pearl,
the higher its price, but a dull,
lustreless large pearl is usually less
valuable than a smaller pearl with
greater lustre.

Cultured pearls come in a varie-
ty of colors, from rose, white and
cream, to silver, blue and black.
Good quality cultured pearls
should have a rich undertone, and
the color should be even and not
blotchy.

There is as great a variety of
shapes available as there are col-
ors. Few pearis, natural or
cultured, are perfectly sym-
metrical. Nevertheless, the closer a
pearl comes to this ideal, the more
value it holds.

An absence of flaws in the sur-
face of a cultured pearl is another
significant sign of superior quali-
ty. Avoid pearls with disfiguring
spots, cracks and blemishes.
