A report on the mayoral and aldermanic candidates portion of the meeting appeared in the Nov. 9 issue of the News. Nine candidates are running for five West Vancouver School District 45 board seats in the Nov. 17 municipal elections. Barbara Howard, one of three incumbent trustees wha recently voted to close Hillside Middle School and have a new school built in the Cauifeild Plateau area, said future population estimates were ‘‘on the verge’? of war- ranting the change. Howard said that a new school, combining, recreational facilities for the municipality, would pro- vide ‘‘good value for the price."” Incumbent Pamela Clark agreed, saying, ‘‘It takes a long time to get a school into the ground,”* Added incumbent Jean Ferguson, ‘“‘Do you plan for the future or plan for the past? Caulfeild Plateau looks like the future to me.”” But while Clark and Ferguson underlined the importance of upgrading aging facilities, nine- year veteran Margot Furk said she was against the new school. The numbers, she said, did not warrant it. And Furk spoke out for profes- sionalism over unionism among teachers. I’ve got the key . i to your future! * a P oe D. Newcomer Stephen Sinclair said that attracting top quality teachers and making the school district more environmentally aware were priorities, and Lions Bay resident and trustee candidate James Nelson said that students outside central West Vancouver, in such areas as Lions Bay and Bowen Island, were not getting the same quality of education as those in the municipality. Candidate Peter Bradshaw, who has been involved in the education system in England, Australia and elsewhere in Canada, wanted to see ‘‘careful monitoring’? of how the Sullivan Royal Commission report on education was im- plemented. He also wanted the school district’s land bank preserved. David Stevenson, meanwhile, said implementing the ‘*Year 2000" recommendations from the Sullivan report should be a priori- ty in District 45. He said he would also bring his experience as a youth and family counsellor to the job of trustee. And trustee candidate Kim Stephens said actions taken now by the district would ‘‘shape the rest of the decade.”’ Of the new candidates polled on how many school board meetings they had attended, Bradshaw said he had gone to 60 per cent during the last two years, while Nelson had gone to one or two. Sinclair said he had gone to three; Stephens said he had at- tended ‘ta number in the last few months;’’ and Stevenson said he had been to several throughout the Lower Mainland.
