FOR EUGENE Daly a lifelong interest in
miniatures has been culminated by a model railway
that has taken 10 years to build.

With over 200 feet of track
and more than 200 rail cars
pulled by many different
types of locomotives, Eugene
has created a German Alps
scene and populated it with
hundreds of tiny people. The
trains travel from one town
through a rural alps scene,
then onto another town with

a nearby skiing spot.

As a young boy in England
Eugene was always interested
in models and knew that one
day he would own a model
railway that he would be hap-
py with. When he first saw an
N-scale model, which is
1/160 of real size, he knew
that was what he wanted.

He began building his set
in the carport but soon realiz-
ed he would have to move in-
doors. His wife agreed to
move their bedroom to
another similar sized room to
allow Eugene to build in the
one room which had the door
and window placed in a way
that wouldn’t interfere with
the railway layout.

A lot of sketching and
planning began then and was
followed by the construction
of the tables for the tracks
and the landscaping. A wood
frame wire was laid then
covered with paper tole and
plaster and then painted.
Realism is a driving force in
his work so Eugene made
rubber moulds of rock faces
that he liked, to enable him
to get a realistic mountain-
