Wednesday Friday & Sunday) rap Ternes admitted to drinking prior to ploughing into the teenagers with his car. Some segments of the community are furious at the sentence — they say it is too lenient. But can any length of jail term make amends for the death of Steven Oakley and the maiming of Craig Pot- ter? In passing sentence, Judge Cowan said Ternes was obviously remorseful. Terne’s 22-year jail term is to provide society with a general deterrent. Harsher jail terms — as recommended by Mothers Against Drinking Drivers (MADD) and the victims’ parents — will not deter others from drinking and driving. The deterrent has already occurred — drinking and driving has killed one boy and maimed another. Society must learn that the penalty of drinking and driving is not licence suspension, fines or jail terms, but the potential of murder. No user of alcohol is im- mune. No: drinker should forget the tragedy of Steven Oakley and Craig Potter. Montreal’s University,-where he won-a gold award in economics last spring. Science student Daniel Promislow, McGill ° the 1986 winner, had a similar ac- ademic track record. At 21 he was within a few months of graduating as a B.Sc. at Chicago University, where he’d already spent three years. But the Rhodes Scholarship Trust selection committees look for leadership qualities, athletic achievement and community ser- vice as well as. purely academic prowess. Both West Van winners measured up. Robert Wai was a_ provincial badminton champion, has tutored high school students and worked as'a volunteer with housebound seniors.
