The Lonsdale Quay’s Cheshire Cheese Inn therefore had a ready-made clientele when it open- ed its doors with the rest of the * Quay in April. No foreign muck served here, me lads, just a good cross-section of the rib-sticking stodge upon which the mighty British Empire was built and upon which snooty European types have always sneered down long noses. The Quay’s Cheshire Cheese Inn joins two other Cheshire Cheese outlets in the Lower Mainland and, like the established Cheeses, is billed as a traditional English restaurant. Well, Claridge’s it is not, but the Cheshire Cheese Inn does not claim to serve the upper classes of British cuisine. {nstead, it presents hearty work- ing class nosh in upper middle class surroundings. Entrees and other main dishes range from $5 to $9. Most are simple meat and potato concoc- tions. All will knock the stiff up- tabie hopping Timothy Renshaw pers from the face of any hunger. Britishers, both recently arrived and long = since culturally ac- climatized, will prick up ears at the sound of such selections as Cor- nish Pasty and = Shepherd's Pie (both $4.95) and Ploughman's Lunch ($5.25), a British Pub staple since the crusades, The Cheese menu also inchides glimmers of Cockney literary vibrance with such selections as Bubble and Squeak ($4.25). The dish, which sounds more like a comedy duo, is 4 traditional baked = British = cencoction con- sisting of beef slices topped with fried cabbage and cheddar cheese. Unfortunately for the practising beerophile, the Cheese does not quite back up its menu with the kins of liquid refreshment pected from a British style restau- rant. Though listed on the menu, English bitter beer, represented by Watney’s, is no longer available. Face is partially saved with the inclusion of Bass Pale Ale ($3.50) See Tasty Page 25 ON BENT OUT oF SHAPE 7 TRY REC FITNESS CHESHIRE CHEESE Inn manager Luisa Pears displays some of the traditional pub fare to be found at her Lonsdale Quay restaurant.
