34 - Sunday, August 31, 1986 - North Shave News Sports NEW LEAGUE FORMED Semi-pro soccer to head back to THE NORTH Shore may once again have a team in the semi- professional Pacific Rim Soccer League, league president Jim Richardson said Thursday. By STEPHEN BARRINGTO! News Reporter The last team to be in the league was the North Shore Colts, which ceased operations in December of 1985. ‘‘We do have another group and we will be having meetings Sept. 15,°* Richardson said. He declined to name the group, saying that the league had been “‘burned in the pest’? when ap- parently committed ‘eams failed to pay the franchise fee. THE GORDON Sturtridge Foot- ball League will be accepting regis- trations for the 86-87 season Sept. 2-7. League publicity director Cam Turner said Thursday that the GSL is the only league in the province that divides players up.by both weight and age. This way, he says, 150-pound players will not be squaring off against 100-pound players. “If a player is too heavy that person won't be put in the age division even though the age might be right,’’ he explained. The league, named after CFL great Gordon Sturtridge who was killed in a plane crash in 1955, strives to teach North Shore youngsters the discipline, skills and fun of football. “*Because he was really really ac- tive in junior football they decided to name the league after him,” Turner said. Registration, which costs be- tween $25 and $75 depending on the category, will be held at Norgate Park behing the Interna- tional Plaza Hotel. On Sept. 2-5, registrations wilt be accepted from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. On Sept. 6-7, registrations will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Flag football is open to boys and girls aged six years to 11 years. Full contact football is open to boys aged 10 years to 15 years. For more information contact Peter Lancaster at 988-6000. In ad- dition, the team will have to chip in to the tune of $2,000 for league expenses, he said. “We're being a little more selec- tive this year,’’ said Richardson. ‘We're going to have seven or eight teams.’’ Last year the league had four teams. But this season will see other changes apart from the increased roster — the league will soon have a new name. The PRSL recently joined with the National Soccer League of Quebec in amalgamating with the National Soccer League of On- tario. ‘‘We now have a truly na- tional semi-professional soccer league,’’ he said. V The trio has applied to soccer's governing bodies to have the name changed to the National Soccer League of Canada. ‘We will then be called the National Soccer League of Canada Pacific Rim Division,” he added. But he could not say when the name change might be made of- ficial ‘*To be honest, the way the Canadian Soccer Association works I couldn’t tell you.”” As for a coach, he said he did not know who would be at the helm of the new team. Former Colts coach Frank Pike has ‘given no indication he’s ready to come back and coach a team,”’ Richard- son said. Pike was unavailable for com- ment to press time Thursday.
