Speck was responding to a report in the Communicator, | a publication put out by the British Columbia and Yukon Community Newspapers Association, that said postmasters across Canada will be told ad mail sales ef- forts must net infringe on. private business. According to the Com- municator, acting Canada Post president Don Landers will issue a directive shortly. But Hugh Dickson, execu- tive director of the com- munity newspapers: organization, says the direc- tive has not arrived and he does not know when to ex- pect it. He is urging all community and suburban publishers to mount a let- ter-writing campaign to local MPs. DIRECTIVE Dickson says the directive will be two-fold: postmasters will be told to be less ag- gressive in marketing ad mail, and they will be told to be more “‘reasonable’’.in in- terpreting the complex regu- lations that govern the delivery of newspapers by the postal corporation. Speck. and Dickson both agree that the delivery of @ flyers, or ad mail as it is called in the industry, cuts into revenue of community and suburban newspapers. Speck and Dickson are both equally vocal about the fact that the post office, as a tax-subsidized Crown cor- poration, is playing unfairly by aggressively chasing after business they say is theirs. . STEALING Speck charged Canada Post with stealing from community newspapers to “staggering deficits."” “We are corporate and personal taxpayers,'’ Speck said, ‘and we are fighting to make a living, to pay our employees, our taxes and to run a business. On the other hand, the tax-subsidized Canada Post is busy running around selling our flyers at lower rates and subsidizing the difference with our tax money. “We are restricted by law from delivering mail,’ Speck continued, ‘although See Publishers 17 = Sunday; December 15, 1985 — North Shore News ENS iD B? “Wed, ry WS vy Christmas Speciai A Ope ee opm () conse" 200m gg nie subsidize what he termed Page 21 Waterworks Beth & Kitchen Boutique We've moved! 145 Lonsdale, NV.
