Dear Editor: Re: Our Polar Sea problem Canadians have a Polar Sea problem. They want to hold onto our northern ar- chipelago, its adjoining Marine and mineral resources included. But, they have an interest, also, in “freedom of the high seas."’ Easy navigation is essential to Canada, a major trading nation. Foreign vessels are wel- come in our ports. Free passage for foreign flagships ty POLAR SEA is essential to our economic well being. Imagine what would happen if imports and exports from Canada were denied passage through other watercourses around the world. ‘Smagine what would happen if access to the English Channel, Strait of Gibraltar, the Panama Canal, the U.S. side of the Saint Lawrence Seaway was subject to the whims of neighboring nations, Commerce by water, I contend, is one thing. Ownership of the land and adjoining marine and min- eral resources another. Ca- nadians should be open minded where transportation is concerned. They should be possessive and firm when ownership of islands, fish, oil and gas etc. are involved. The trip of the U.S. Polar Sea through Canada's arctic: waters must be viewed in this light. Welcome it as a transportation break- through. Ignore it as a challenge to Canadian Society will judge Collins - Dear Editor: I usually view the writings of Doug Collins with detached bemusement, realizing they're the redneck rantings of a deluded dilet- - tante. However, the Collins tome ; (‘Women whiners a curse,’’ Aug. 2) cannot challenged. His vitriolic »pewings about women, relationships, rape and homosexuality are the. vio- lent outpourings of a twisted mind. Such hateful spite is repugnant to those of us who respect women and have wives and daughters to cherish. Such views are unfit for public consumption, should other tortured souls hold similar thoughts and thus be encouraged by Collins’ scribblings. However, | wouldn't censor him. By be- ° ing exposed to Collins’ triteful, tedious mean- derings, society will be able to judge him in much the same manner as James Keegstra. _ Fortunately, | believe the majority will view Collins’ offerings in much the same fashion as | do: It’s pure, unadulterated dung. Pauli C. Marck, West Vancouver Dear Editor: When the West Vancouver Council grants builders permission to develop it would seem appropriate to inform them of our West Vancouver by-laws. To our knowledge the 7 a.m. - 7 p.m, noise by-law is broken every single day, including Sundays. Either we have it enforced or we don’t have the by-law -- and that would be wicked. Hilary and Geoffrey Bur- sill-Hallt West Vancouver go un- BETTY FOX and Olympic gold medalist Lori Fung look on as Vancouver Mayor Mike Harcourt congratulates one of eight people who ran from B.C. Place to Robson ownership in the far north. Go for freedom on the high seas in the arctic and elsewhere. But, take a hard line when it comes to sovereignty. The arctic ar- chipelago is Canada’s because our people were there first. No Court tecognizing history, and knowing the difference be- tween transporation and possession, will see it other- wise. Hon. Jack Davis, M.L.A. North Vancouver-Seymour Dear Editor: I would like to refer you to the article in Wednesday, August 21 edition of the North Shore News entitled, ‘Century Battle Claims Two Victims.” Towards the end of the article, but still on page 3, ! am introduced as saying that I have ‘tseen at least five Management teams hired and fired in that time’’, i.e., since my tenancy began in 1980. 7 - Friday, September 6, 1985 - North Shore News anagemen Arctic voyage a breakthrough |_comes, gces J wean Ee we yt t This is not quite what I said. My actual words were that I have seen at least five groups ‘‘come and go’’. I don’t know that they were fired. In fact, if they quit, the finger might be more clearly pointed at the difficulties of trying to manage the building, leading them to give up the job in despair. David A.
