A host of golden daffodils

PROFESSIONAL growers in Holland call them
narcissus. In England they’re called jonquils. But,
what’s in a name? Everyone knows and loves the

sparkling daffodil.

There are 12 divisions and
more than 8,000 varieties of
“daffs’ listed in the for-
midable International Regis-
ter of Daffodil Names. No
one could possibly get to
know them ali, but a number
of the major varieties are
considered “‘musts’’? for a
distinctive and. colorful plan-
ting.

Some daffadil varieties
blossom as early as late
March, others as late as

ression of daffodils in bloom
throughout the entire spring

Many mail order firms,
home and garden centres,
hardware stores, mass mer-
chandiser and discount
department stores offer col-
lections of three or more
daffodil varieties.

Daffodil bulbs must be
planted in the fall. The
Netherlands Flower-bulb In-
stitute, the Holland bulb in-
formation agency in North
America, recommends put-
ting them into the ground
when. the. soil temperature
falls below 15° C (60°F).
This generally occurs from

late September to late
October. -
Daffodils prefer partial

shade. Avoid planting them
in areas which receive direct
midday sun.

Good drainage is essential.
