A? - Friday, April 6, 1984 - North Shore News Gi mailbox West Van needs deposit program Dear Editor Re editorial ‘‘Pay as you use’’, March ! and Mayor’s response, March 21. The reply from Derrick Humphreys, Mayor, does not attempt to respond to your editorial. This critique is based upon the following: ‘*Saving $40,000’’. The Mayor would not have to visit the bank if an ap. propriate cash flow plan, supported by a prudent short term deposit program, had been instituted. There is a great advantage, in these days of high interest rates, to receiving an annual income in a lump sum. Irrespective of when the lump sum is received, although the earlier the better, the effect over the years is the same. Short term govt. bonds and term deposits produce interest rates as high as 11.5%. An annual budget of $10,000,000 could therefore provide an income of over $500,000 during a 12-month period. ‘*‘Water rates’’. The Mayor says the golf clubs pay for water but he does not attempt to explain why the cost per 1,000 gallons is in the 80 cent bracket for the clubs, but over $1.25 for the average household. Costs for clubs are based upon data releaased by the Hall. ‘‘Garbage and Sewer’’. The Mayor expresses his opinion but ignores the issues raised in the editorial as well as the fact that those who do not use the school system pay school taxes. The decision for change was taken to appease the affluent, no doubt about it. Maxwell H. French West Vancouver Is Montroyal link just make-work? Dear Editor: As residents of two dif- ferent streets (Montroyal and Skyline) in the Canyon Heights area, we wish to pose some questions and offer some comments regarding the ‘‘Montroyal Link’’ issue. For the majority affected by the implementation of this proposal, could the outcome be a net liability with substantial safety concerns? Consider that mountain-road like, lazy stretch of Mon- troyal between Mosquito Creek and Delbrook, a scenic but at times challenging route, with parked cars, steep driveways, an angled in- tersection, spots of poor visibility, often slippery sur- faces fromyack of sun, anda busy firehall — this quite clearly 1s not a route that caters to high volumes of hurried traffic. The proposal. iS not just a link to Lonsdale, but also a key tie in the cross- mountain route to points fur- ther east, and accordingly, will offer the potential for traffic increases of major proportion. Residents of the City and District no doubt share the same frustrations and fears of the infamous five way crossing at 23rd, Larson and Mahon. Is there a potential repeat of this situation at Rockland, Prospect and Montroyal? Looking at the plus side, no one will ‘‘argue the fact that fewer cars will use the side streets’’, so says Mr. James Bussey in his letter to the Editor of March 18th, or will they? Once the link is in place, the many users will soon discover other new short cuts, such as _ the ‘Skyline connection’’ to points south and west, another rouie with some challen ingturns and hazards, among them the toddlers of the many new young second- generation settlers. If your readers’ choice to settle on the North Shore was as ours, to seek refreshment from the big city life, then they must view critically Pro Life ‘twisting numbers’ Dear Editor: Let me assure you that Lions Gate Hospital does not ‘‘dismiss’’ the lawsuit brought against us by George Carruthers and Michael Whelton as ‘‘a mere Pro Life nuisance’’ as sug- gested by your editorial of March 28. On the contrary, our concern for the 12 physicians named in this suit, the 3,500 members of the North and West Vancouver Hospital Society and the community we serve obligates us to take this action extremely seriously. There are, however, a number of questionable issues which were com- pounded by your editorial Firstly, the plainuffs appear to present impressive statistics to show that LGH does far more abortions than most hospitals, simply because of the way our doctors define “health” Not so) Our abortion rate is high because a number of other B ¢ hospitals refuse to perform the procedure Ml is perhaps understandable that prefer to performed in the relatively anonymous setting of a larger hospital While abortion women have aboruions the Canadian have oon eteased more Chan six fold ao the past 1O vears Louk substantially the I9'4 Both Car Mi hiclton Pwistilig STATISTIES the annual figures at have ore maimed same sine ruthers and hitow they are nurbers when they attempt te North Shore protbom setagely that itre has oa wba ues with abortions Pro Life miceatbers he Wot ld a in teyeut alth Organization's definition of health, saying it permits doctors to justify performing abortions. But the WHO definition was in widespread use before the changes to Canada’s Criminal Code which permitted abortions for reasons of health. LGH and its physicians care deeply for our patients. Therefore we resent. the implication that anyone not “Pro Life’? is somehow anti-life. We are concerned about our abortion statistics and in the past we have supported studies to help us understand them.
