LOOKING AT INSURANCE Charges may not apply NO MATTER how sick you are, it’s possible to get life in- surance — if you can afford the premiums This doesn’t apply to every company, of course. Most companies have limits beyond which they won’t go in offering coverage... all of which 1s a lead-in to the sub ject of extra premium charges for life insurance. Let's say you agree to buy a policy from me. You sign the apphcatton, give me a cheque for the premium amount | ask for, then, because it’s a big policy, you must go tor a routine medical exam to make sure you're as healthy as you think you are The doctor finds a medical impairment and reports this to the company, the result may be that when your con tract os sent to me for dchivery, there's a note al tached about an extia premium charge Depending on the impairment (if it hap yveons fo be Cnone of my Dasiness*) a vague statement about oa medical impair ment may be piven Phas means that when | present the poly Loan only refer you to 24 HOURS TELEPHONE ANSWERING SERVICE ONLY $50 PER MONTH CLASSIFIED ANSWERING SERVICE 669-7973 By MARILYNNE A. The reason the extra charge 1s assessed is simply that individuals suffering from certain impairments, on average won't live as long as people who don't have the problem - again on average. Because) medical science has made progress and mortality records are being kept, diseases and other pro- blems that once demanded extras, now don't, or the ex tras are not as high as they once were. (On the other hand, for certain diseases, they could be higher if mor tality figures) become — less favourable) Diabetes is a case in point. Fifty years ago diabetics might not have been offered life insurance at all. Then along came the discovery of insulin. This meant that diabetics could be insured by paying an extra amount of premium. Today, depending on the severity of the disease, diabetics might not be charg- ed any extra. Similarly, elevated blood pressure that is being con trolled may not result in a premium extra. Premiums are not assessed for life, necessarily. When a problem has been overcome and a prescribed length of time has passed since the pro blem was successfully countered, the cxtra charge might be dropped For example, an cxtra charge assessed for obesity might be reconsidered if the Appointment Notice NORTH VANCOUVER Chuck Traunwelser, Manager of A.E. Premium extras may also be charged for adangerous oc- cupation (deep-sea diving) or dangerous hobby (sky- diving) — and dropped when the dangerous activity is no longer pursued, for whatever length of time the insuring company deems significant. The interesting thing for me in thts area of assessing extra insurance risk is how much more desirable life in- surance becomes when you're told you can't have it. Human nature at work Marilynne A.
