All excavation, con-
struction and_ structural
design on sloping terrain of
30 degrees or more in North
Vancouver District must
now be certified and
supervised by a geotechnical
engineer.

This is the
recommendation contained
in a set of development
guidelines for sloping terrain
accepted as policy last week
by Distnet council.

The report was requested
and prepared following the
mudslides on Riverside
Drive in North Vancouver
during last) December's
rainstorms, in which several
properties were heavily
damaged

members of the building

aimed at preventing any

“The object of
following guidelines,” the
report continues, “is an
attempt to control
developments on _— sloping
(errain so as to eliminate, or
at least minimize, as much as
possible. the possibility of
future damage to adjacent
properties which might
result from development on
or adjacent to slopes above
or below other
properties.”

Guidelines are set out for
three different types of
terrain, slopes less than 20°,
slopes between 20° and 30",
and slopes 30° or greater.
