Crowned King bring poweriul sound to CD @ xxxek* Crowned King — Tempring Fate (Independent release TF-855) Order CD at Website . NORTH Vancouver's Crowned King are mak- ing same noise this summer with the release of their new CD Tempting Faie and live pertor- mances. The talented seven-piece ska/punk ensem- ble were invited to play the Vans Warped tour's Calgary date last week. “The show went really well,” says the band’s vocalisr Shaun Frank. “We started the set with about 100 people watching and by the end we easily had about 300 people. It was pretty amazing to be plaving at the same venue as some of our rele models (Green Day, NOFX). We played a seven-song set, and then ended up selling a whole bunch of CD's. The trip was a total success.” Crowned King played on a smaller stage sponsored by the Ernie Ball company — there were five stages in all with 30 bands performing at the all-day event. Their set was videotaped and will be part of an online competi- tion at start- ing August 8. To win a recording contract from SpinRecords.com the band must win a popular vote of fans at the Ernie Ball site. Judging by their new CD Tempting Fate - Crewned King should have a good chance of winning the competition. The young band have transferred the energy and power of their live show to the studio without los- ing any of its impact. Credit producer Rick Colhoun for help- ing Crowned King realize their potential on the tracks recorded at Greenhouse Studios and. The Sandcastle. Along with Shaun Frank the band consists of Chris Hong — trumpet, Jordan Frank — saxophones, John - Luccock — trombone, Ryan Delmaire — guitar, Andy Martin — bass and Chris -- Lambert drums. By definition ska/punk can be an over- powering experience and in the wrong hands the music can be reduced to little more than cliches. But bands such as Boston's Mighty Mighty Bosstones and Crowned King have enough savvy to break- though stercotypes and create their own sound. The first single off Tempting Fate “A Million Pictures” captures Crowned King at their best. A full blast from the horns and Ryan Delmaire’s rocking guirar lead us into Frank’s vocal. The CD is full of great material played with power and originality. Going from a whisper to 2 scream and back again is not an easy thing to do and Crowned King do it with ease. A wonderful noise. In his latest effort, Transcendental Blues, Earle returns to his roots, fronting 15 solid tracks with that signa- ture redneck, twisted Texan drawl. His voice has a stark, whiskey-soaked, Willie Nelson quali- ty — the threadbare, top-down style of a true “been-there-done-that” maverick. Since he first hit the Nashville scene as a songwriter in the °70s, Earle has lived his life like he’s written his songs: gritty, hard and raw. Earle hit his stride with 1987’s Exit 0 and then released nvo more studio albums and 2 pair of live compilations before dropping from the music scene altogether in 1991. It was the beginning of a four-year journey for Earle to get off drugs, out of jail, into rehab and get back to the studio. His late renaissance began with the acousti- cal gem Train a’ Comin’ in 1995.
