By Ken Grant Contrifnuing Writer Highest at risk are mates, ace counting for 85% of the total. In the !$5- to 49-year-old group, nine out of 10 drowning victims are mate. One-third of drownings involve power boats, usually small crafts under 18 feet (5.4 m) in length with flat or round bottoms. Trag- ically, more than 50% of all boating fatalities involve alcohol. Norvan Power and Sail Squadron, one of three North Shore squadrons, is a member of the largest national recreational boating training organization in Canada. It is a non-profit, vol- unteer-based network of boaters passing on knowledge to those less experienced, All training and administration is carried out by volunteers. Courses offered by Norvan are divided into two types: public courses which may be taken either in the classroom or by cor- respondence and advanced courses oftered only to members of the Canadian Power Squadron. The Norvan Power and Sail Squadron's fall program of boating courses includes: © Basic Boating Course This course is offered every fall and spring and is open to the public. Its purpose is to teach safe handling of all types of boats. You do not have to have a boat to enrol. If you have an interest in ‘outboards, canoes, cruisers or sail this course is a must. The course covers boat handling in normal and adverse conditions, ‘fee of $120 for a single, seamanship and common emergencies, the rules of the road, aids to navigation, government regulations and cquipment — re- quirements, . Basics of compass and chart familiarization as well as begin- ning piloting will also be covered, Norvan offers the course on Monday or Tuesday night, for a or $180 for a family. @ VHF Radio Course The VHF Radio Course is of- fered in both the fall and spring course program, The course, open to anyone, provides training in the use of the phonetic alphabet, and correct radio-telephone operating procedures. The course enables the student to pass the Department of Com- munications’ Restricted Radio- telephone Operator's Certificate Exam given at the conclusion of the course. Basic boating course graduates are eligible to take the advanced courses offered by any Canadian Power and Sail Squadron. You must be a member of CPS to qualify. This fall, Norvan will be offer- ing three of more than nine ad- vanced and clective courses: @ Seamanship The primary objective of this course is to provide the theoretical knowledge to be able to handle a boat in rough weather, and to deal with emergency situations. Course content will include ex- panded piloting knowledge (rela- tive bearings and the running fix; effects of current and leeway and new skills in coastal navigation). Seamanship Power will be held on Tuesday nights for $85. @ Junior Navigator This is the first of a two-year celestial navigation course. The navigator applies the science of cartography and astronomy to set a course and position at sea, much as a pilot uses landmarks. Students will learn the tech- niques necessary to navigate at sea using celestial aids to determine position, including extensive use of the’sextant. Students will also explore celestial observation, time diagrams, plotting sights, Great Circle and Mercator charts, and the sailing triangle. The course has not been offered for several years but will be avail- able on Thursday Nights for $115. Other courses will be offered again in January.
